Outdoor building signs need to do several jobs at once. They need to represent the business clearly, fit the storefront or building façade, remain appropriate for exterior use, and support the mounting plan for the actual location. That is why choosing an exterior sign starts with more than selecting a color or uploading a logo. It starts with the building, the viewing distance, the available mounting surface, and the effect you want customers to see from outside.

Crafted 3D Signs offers three principal exterior starting points: Series 2A custom exterior 3D logo signs, Series 2B storefront 3D exterior business signage, and Series 7 custom printed metal signs. Each option serves a different visual and practical need. This guide explains how to begin the comparison before requesting a quote.

Exterior projects can call for a raised 3D logo panel, direct-mounted storefront components, or a printed metal sign. The best starting point depends on the location, visibility needs, and mounting surface.

Begin with where people will see the sign

Stand across the street, in the parking area, or at the first pedestrian approach to your storefront. The sign that works beautifully at arm’s length may not be the sign that works from the relevant viewing distance. Consider whether people need to identify the business while walking by, driving by, entering a shared commercial building, or locating a specific suite.

Then look at the installation surface. Is the sign going onto a flat façade, an existing storefront band, a wall with texture, a freestanding post-and-panel structure, or another surface? Share a clear photo that shows the entire area, not only a close-up of the wall. The sign team can use that context to review sign size, layout, and installation needs more effectively.

Choose Series 2A when a dimensional panel sign fits the location

Series 2A is a custom exterior 3D logo sign designed for a bold, professional building or storefront presence. The layout, colors, size, and lighting can be personalized around the logo and the project needs. It is a useful starting point when a defined sign panel will improve visibility or create contrast against the building surface.

An exterior panel can help organize a logo that has separate components, fine colors, or a shape that would not stand out on the façade by itself. It also gives the business a clear, unified sign form. The final size and configuration should be discussed in relation to the site, not chosen only from a screen mockup.

Choose Series 2B when direct-mounted storefront components are the goal

Series 2B uses individual 3D acrylic logo components for exterior storefront installation. The components are finished with laminated 3M vinyl in a matte finish. This can be the right approach when you want the building face itself to act as the background and you prefer a clean, dimensional storefront look.

As with any direct-mounted style, the façade matters. A direct-wall or direct-façade sign works best when the installation surface, contrast, spacing, and mounting approach support the logo. Include information about the façade material and any existing elements that could affect placement, such as awnings, windows, architectural trim, exterior lighting, or mounted equipment.

Choose Series 7 when full-color printed graphics fit the need

Series 7 custom printed metal signs are made from durable, waterproof ACM with custom full-color printed vinyl graphics. They are designed for outdoor use and can be mounted to an existing structure or used as a freestanding post-and-panel sign. This option can be a practical starting point for businesses that need a straightforward, professional exterior sign with printed graphics rather than separate raised logo components.

The visual language is different from a raised 3D sign. A printed metal sign is flat rather than dimensional, but it can communicate detailed graphics and color efficiently. The decision should reflect the location, budget, brand style, and what a customer needs to understand at the point of viewing.

Understand the exterior material conversation

Crafted 3D Signs exterior sign styles use an ACM backer and acrylic 3D components for exterior durability where the Series calls for those elements. Exterior printed vinyl uses 3M vinyl with lamination for added protection. These materials are selected for exterior use, but the correct sign still depends on the specific installation location and plan.

Sun exposure and environmental conditions affect how any exterior sign is experienced over time. The current guidance explains that color longevity depends on the degree of exposure and the environment; an exact fade timeline should not be assumed. If the sign will receive strong direct sun or is being installed in an unusually exposed location, discuss that context at the quote stage.

Plan the project before ordering

An exterior sign quote is more accurate when it includes the logo file, a photo of the complete façade, the intended location marked on the photo if possible, approximate available width and height, any desired sign dimensions, and whether the sign should be raised, printed, lighted, or mounted directly to the façade. If your business must obtain property-owner or local approvals for signage, confirm those requirements for your location before committing to a final size or placement.

Every custom sign is manufactured from scratch at Crafted 3D Signs’ workshop in Miami, Florida, and orders are shipped nationwide.
